On October 5, 2015, 85-year-old Chinese female scientist Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her successful development of artemisinin. The award for artemisinin, which combines traditional Chinese medicine concepts and Western research methods, shows the future development direction of modern medicine and brings a lot of inspiration to human health and wellness.
Artemisinin is a highly fat-soluble sesquiterpene lactone peroxide isolated from Artemisia annua. The traditional Chinese medicine method of heating and decoction will damage it and lose its therapeutic effect. Therefore, from a professional point of view, the development of artemisinin is a re-study of traditional Chinese medicine in the way of Western medicine. It follows the methods of modern pharmacology and chemistry. Through purification, determination of chemical structure, and analysis of toxic efficacy , animal experiments, clinical trials, extraction process optimization and other modern pharmaceutical processes, which have obtained extremely practical and innovative results, which have opened up a new way for the development of new drugs. By converting the pharmacology contained in traditional Chinese medicine into a form that the whole world can understand, it has been recognized and highly valued by the Western medical community.
So, what does the discovery of artemisinin mean for Chinese medicine? Zhang Boli, president of the Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, believes that this award is the world's recognition of the Chinese scientific community. One shows that China's scientific undertakings and scientific and technological development have been recognized by the world and have made great progress. The door has been opened, and more achievements will continue to emerge, and even more winners will emerge. Zirat, chairman of the selection committee for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, also said that after the purification of modern technology and the combination of modern medicine, the achievements of Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of diseases are "remarkable".
Recently, the State Council passed the "Law of the People's Republic of China on Traditional Chinese Medicine (Draft)" and the "Outline of the Strategic Plan for the Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine (2016-2030)", which will increase support for the development of the traditional Chinese medicine industry, and propose that by 2020 the traditional Chinese medicine industry The total output value accounts for more than 30% of the total output value of the pharmaceutical industry, and the traditional Chinese medicine industry has become one of the important pillars of the national economy..." The spring of the development of the traditional Chinese medicine industry has come.
